Question: What do you think of the standard breakfast of pro builders that you see in the popular muscle mags. You know, “The egg whites, banana and oatmeal with raisins breakfast.”
Rocky
Answer: The standard “egg whites, banana and oatmeal” breakfast of the professional bodybuilder is often copied by the novice.
It is a terrible choice. This dietary combination provides a glycemic load that is too high. Bananas and raisins have a high glycemic index, as does oatmeal. Hence, insulin levels climb after this meal.
After that type of breakfast, the newbie may reach for ephedra or caffeine. Your blood sugar is crashing because of the insulin rush, so your body tells you to go to Starbucks and to pour down Java. As a result, your cortisol increases so that you can have energy to work out.
In particular, egg whites are one of my pet peeves. Eggs should be eaten whole! Forget about the anti-cholesterol propaganda that has no scientific basis. The body digests egg whites too quickly to be of value. Whole eggs are better at supporting healthy glucose levels.
When we run into food allergies at the Poliquin Performance Centers, it is the most common food allergen. This is not because of genetics, but because they are inhaled, not chewed, by bodybuilders.
